On a hilltop in Belmont

Perched on a promontory in Belmont are Papaya Hill’s two cozy cottages, named for the profusion of wild papaya, pimento, and breadfruit trees in the area. Belmont is a small, peaceful fishing village close to Whitehouse on Jamaica‘s south coast, about 75 minutes from the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. Belmont is known by many as the birthplace of reggae icon Peter Tosh.

Two cozy cottages

Of Papaya Hill’s two cottages, the Bird’s Nest, is a romantic treehouse with an upstairs lounge; the other, Cloud 7 is a 2-bedroom unit with a kitchenette and an exotic outdoor stone shower. Although targeting budget tourists, guests will be blown away by the richness of the vistas of the hillside and the scenic ocean views.

Created by a German transplant

Papaya Hill is the brainchild of Gisela Braun, a German transplant who designed and built out the property with village craftsmen from locally available natural resources. Gisela grows her own fruits and vegetables which she has learned to prepare in the Jamaica way for sharing with her visitors and friends. Papaya offers a farm to table dining option but guests can also prepare their own meals or visit the restaurants and cook shops in the community.

Good access to ganja

Guests have good access to ganja at nearby dispensaries and from local area farmers. Orange Hill, one of Jamaica’s most famous ganja growing areas is not far away. Guests are free to roam the property and smoke on the verandas and in the gardens.

  1. . We were totally surprised by the beauty and peace we experienced as we arrived at Papaya Hill, a tranquil gem of a place nestled in the Mount Irie district. Once we got pass our surprise and amazement at the beauty of the setting, we were able to appreciate the warm welcome we received. We chose to stay in the tree house, I thought I would struggle sleeping because of the creaking wood of the building and that it was built in a tree with the sound of nature’s night keeper’s but I slept like a baby.
Our host Gisi and her partner were amazing, warm, friendly, accommodating and generous of spirit. Will definitely be visiting/staying at Papaya Hill again
